Fed: IVF debate turns into protests

Student protesters in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane yesterday accused Prime Minister
JOHN HOWARD of being homophobic and unwilling to recognise the rights of all women.

They joined a growing list of groups including the Labour party who undermined the
government's plans to ban IVF from single mothers and lesbians.

In Hobart, Labor Party leader KIM BEAZLEY said he agreed with Mr HOWARD'S proposition
that it is best for a child to have a mother and a father.

But he said if that isn't possible it is not a bad thing to be brought up in a household
where you are wanted.

Mr HOWARD said the government had to set a benchmark which benefits children.

He says the government isn't seeking to punish people for a lifestyle choice but it's
reasonable for the community to have a benchmark and that benchmark is based on a concern
about the interests of children.

The Prime Minister was also forced to defend not axing Medicare cover of IVF procedures
as that would apply to single mothers and lesbians in all states.

NSW Liberal leader KERRY CHIKAROVSKI says she would not stop the state's single women
accessing the treatment.

She says she agrees with Mr HOWARD in principle, but says she would not introduce laws
restricting IVF procedures if she became premier.
