Fed: Crean says need shake-up of ALP structure
Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN says a review of the ALP to be headed by former prime
minister BOB HAWKE will aim to modernise the party.
Since becoming Labor leader after the election loss, Mr CREAN has dumped long-serving
frontbenchers in favour of new blood, and promised to put almost all policies up for review.
The ALP's national executive meeting in Canberra today is expected to lay the groundwork
for a review of the party's structure and relationship with unions.
Mr CREAN says there will be no bloodletting, but he will argue the case for a wider
overhaul of the party.
Rules giving unions 60 per cent of the vote at party conferences and forcing ALP members
to belong to a union will be put on the table.
