Six men arrested after police seized about 13 pounds of cocaine in October were arraigned Monday on indictments issued last week by a federal grand jury.
Among them was a seven-count indictment against former Wisconsin Badgers running back Marvin Artley and Jerry McCoy.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Crocker ordered that all six be jailed pending trials, which were set for January and February. Each man pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Anderson said he intends to take the case back to a grand jury and that additional indictments against some of the men are likely.
Officials have said about $600,000 worth of cocaine was seized in raids after a three-year investigation.
Artley, 37, of Madison, and McCoy, 36, of Verona, were indicted on four counts of distributing cocaine and of conspiring to distribute cocaine. McCoy faces two additional counts of dealing cocaine.
The indictment charges that the two were involved in distributing at least a half-pound of cocaine.
McCoy once tried to start a business with ex-Badger football star Ron Dayne. Dayne, now with the New York Giants, sought in 2000 to open a restaurant named for Dayne at 111 W. Main St. in Madison. But the venture ran into difficulty getting a liquor license after it was revealed that McCoy had served prison time for a federal drug conviction.
McCoy is also the brother of Willie McCoy, who shared a Fish Hatchery Road apartment with Artley that was the site of a botched drug robbery last year. That incident ended with the shooting death of one of the alleged robbers, Adrian Bowdry. Nobody has been charged with Bowdry's death, but two men have pleaded no contest to robbery charges and a third man is awaiting trial.
Also arraigned Monday were, Altwan Cross, 24, of Fitchburg, who was indicted on a charge of possessing more than a pound of cocaine with intent to deliver; Montrell Savage, 29, of Madison, possession of cocaine with intent to deliver; Ramiro Garcia Martinez, 48, of Madison, possession at least 12 ounces of cocaine with intent to deliver; and Liborio Prado Morales, 30, of Madison, possession of more than a pound of cocaine and crack cocaine with intent to deliver.
Sex charge filed
A 36-year-old Madison man was charged Monday with child enticement after he allegedly had sex with a 14-year-old girl he met on the Internet.
Abdallah A.S. Kibope was also charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly hitting his wife after she confronted him about it.
According to a criminal complaint, Kibope told police he met the girl playing checkers on the Yahoo! Web site and that they met in person a few times before having sex last week at a park.
Kibope's wife told police she called a number on his cell phone after she noticed he had made several calls to that number, the complaint states. The girl's mother answered and said she believed her daughter was having a relationship with Kibope, according to the complaint.
Kibope was jailed on $5,500 bail at a court appearance Monday.
